ANTS, THEIR BEHAVIOR & CRAFT -- LEARN & LINK

Do you have an educational post that is about your child and you would like to share? It can be a craft, a lesson, sport etc. that your child learned this week. You do not have to be a homeschooler to LINK up below - happy to have you join us! Then come back every Friday and continue to share your learn and link post! Please do not link up educational reviews - thanks!

For my 7 and 5 year old we use Apologia Flying Creatures for our science curriculum. Last week we learned about ants so we had a fun time learning about their behaviors.

We placed a paper plate on our patio with different foods on it to see what the ants preferred.

We were surprised in their selections. I thought for sure they would go for the sweet stuff like the strawberry and marshmallow.

They preferred the popcorn the most and then the goldfish and humus next.

Then we did a ant picnic craft:

Materials needed:
white paper
red crayons or markers
food sale ads
scissors, glue stick
black ink pad & black thin marker

The kids made their paper look like picnic table clothes and then they went through the grocery store sale ad and cut out all the foods they wanted at their picnic.

Then they glued them on their picnic table cloth. Next they pressed their index fingers on the ink pad and stamped the picnic table cloth with their finger prints - 3 prints back to back and then they outlined them and drew legs and antennae.

We did the same experiment with the ants and different foods last summer. We were a little surprised at the ants' choices, too.

You're a brave soul for drawing the ants out!

Interesting that the ants didn't want the sweet stuff first. We gave some ants colored sugar water and watched them change colors this summer; it was pretty interesting. I guess they are just interesting little creatures!

What a fun experiment to do. I don't think I could do it though. Ants scare me,lol.

I hope you did the one with the live ants outside!! But this was a great science experiment! I also like that you had the children re create that experiment (without using live ants!!)

This science experiment looks like lots of fun! It was interesting to see what they would eat first.

I will be sharing this post on the Read.Explore.Learn. Facebook and Pinterest board.

What an interesting experiment. My husband would freak out if I did this - he hates bugs of all kinds. Maybe in Summer outside...
